30 Damme Movies in 30 Damme Days! The 30th Damme Day: "Bloodsport" (1988) Well, here we are on day 30, the final Damme day of my Damme 30-day marathon! I watched a JCVD movie every day for 30 days and didn't miss a single one. It was an awesome experience.  I saved the movie "Bloodsport" for the last Damme day. I saw this one in the theater when it originally came out in 1988. Seeing it on the big screen for the first time was truly an awesome experience. I feel like this is the film that everyone knows JCVD from... you could mention his name over the next decade or so and people would say "ah, the guy from Bloodsport." Although he had a couple of prior films, I think this one is the one film that finally made a superstar out of him and put him on the way to become a legendary icon and a household name. In this film, JCVD playsa the real life person Frank Dux. In this movie, he is a soldier in the Army and deserts in order to compete in a secret, dea...

Day 29: "Street Fighter" (1994)

30 Damme Movies in 30 Damme Days The 29th Damme Day: "Street Fighter" (1994) I'm not going to spend much time talking about this one, because it's not that good of a movie. Maybe kids would like it a lot more than adults. It sort of reminded me of a Ninja Turtle movie without the Turtles. Lol. I thought it was very cheesy, horribly cast (especially Bison), and bad acting all around. Usually that would be selling points for me, but I just couldn't get into it. On the other hand, it had some amazing costumes, sets, vehicles, stunts, and effects. It looked amazing. JCVD was the best part of the whole film. The movie is based on the '80s video game of the same title. JCVD plays the game character Colonel Guild who commands an army of US soldiers who look more like a United Nations force with their light blue berets. They go after a villain, a dictator known as M. Bison.  And there you have it. Lol. That's all I'm gonna say about this one. It's only fo...

Day 28: "Kickboxer" (1989)

30 Damme Movies in 30 Damme Days! The 28th Damme Day: "Kickboxer" (1989) For today's Damme movie, we go all the way back to the '80s when JCVD had just a couple starring films under his belt. This is prime Van Damme at his best. After his brother is paralyzed in Thailand during a kickboxing tournament by a ruthless and sadistic kickboxer, JCVD goes to a legendary kickboxer trainer to learn the craft so that he may avenge his brother. The movie has some awesome training scenes in some beautiful locations. One for instance is some ancient temple ruins. Some shots of him training there during a sunset are incredible. Also, the final fight between JCVD and his opponent are in an ancient underground tomb. The final fight is amazing. The two fighters fight in what is called the "Old Way" where their hands are wrapped in cloth, dipped in resin, and then covered with shards of broken glass. You can't lose with this one and to me it is a must see for any JCVD fa...

Day 27: "Hard Target" (1993)

30 Damme Movies in 30 Damme Days! The 27th Damme Day: "Hard Target" (1993) I remember watching this one in the theater when it originally released in '93. What a spectacular film. I watched it this evening on a 4K disc. Beautiful picture quality. This film is amazing. I think it is probably the most polished, biggest budgeted, star studded film of JCVD's career. When I say star studded, it had JCVD, Lance Henriksen, Yancy Butler, Arnold Vosloo, and even Wilford Brimley. This film made a badass out of Wilford Brimley. Lol. It takes place in New Orleans and features the famous above ground graveyards, swamps, and even a final showdown in a Mardi Gras float boneyard. It really is a love letter to that city. It was directed by Hong Kong action film director John Woo which gave it over the top awesome stunts and fights. I read something that said that because John Woo spoke little English, the studio hired Sam Raimi to oversee the entire production and if things didn'...

Day 26: "Death Warrant" (1990)

Image
30 Damme Movies in 30 Damme Days! The 26th Damme Day: "Death Warrant" (1990) In this film, JCVD is a Canadian cop on loan to a police department in the US to go undercover inside a maximum-security prison to investigate why so many inmates are ending up dead. The US use a Canadian because they feel nobody in the US prison would recognize him as a cop. He goes into the prison as someone busted for armed robbery. While on the inside he uncovers a murder conspiracy ran by the guards, some key inmates, and the prison doctor.  The movie features lots of hard-core prison fights and at one point, all the inmates are after Van Damme. It shows the harsh reality of maximum-security prison life. JCVD shows off his flashy martial arts moves with lots of flying and spinning kicks. It was good, but not one of my favorite JCVD films. I feel the prison movie he did much later in his career was better. Give it a look and let me know what you think.  I give it a 5 out of 10...

Day 25: "Lionheart" (1990)

Image
30 Damme Movies in 30 Damme Days! The 25th Damme Day: "Lionheart" (1990) In this classic JCVD movie, he plays a French Foreign Legion soldier who gets word that his brother has been killed in Los Angeles. The legion won't let him leave to go take care of his brother's affairs, so he deserts the Legion. To get money, he stumbles into a bare-knuckle fighting ring. befriending a man who becomes his manager, getting him bigger and better fights with huge payoffs. He uses his share of the winnings to take care of his brother's wife and his niece. The owner of an underground bare-knuckle fighting ring that caters to rich spectators sets him up to lose big time by pitting him against a giant violent fighter. There's also some Legionnaires waiting to capture JCVD and take him back to the Legion to face punishment for desertion. This movie is hard core Van Damme at his best and in his prime. It has all the fighting and action you would expect to see in one of his movi...

Day 24: "Sudden Death" (1995)

Image
30 Damme Days of 30 Damme Movies! The 24th Damme Day: "Sudden Death" (1995) This movie has all the action and coolness you would expect in a JCVD movie. It's "Die Hard" in a hockey arena! It's the final game of the World Cup and the Pittsburgh Penguins are going up against the Chicago Blackhawks for the championship. The game takes place in the giant hockey dome in Pittsburg, and for the big game the vice president of the US is visiting to watch it from the owner's box with the mayor, other VIPs, and a lot of secret service. JCVD plays a fire marshal there that night to make sure everything in the arena goes smoothly as far as fire safety goes. He just happened to get two tickets to the game and brings his two young kids to watch the game while he works. But the night holds other plans... A ruthless terrorist, played perfectly by Powers Boothe, and his team of paid mercenaries have snuck into the arena disguised as security, kitchen staff, and other wor...
