The 18th Damme Day:
'Legionnaire' (1998)
From Peter MacDonald, the guy who directed 'Rambo III', lol...
This film is set in the mid 1920s.
JCVD plays a champion boxer in France who refuses to throw a fight for a mob boss and the boss puts out a hit on him. His only change for escape is to join the French Foreign Legion and leave the country. The movie is basically about him joining the Legion, going through Legion training, and going into combat in the Moroccan desert. Sort of like the movie 'Full Metal Jacket.'
When the mob boss sees a picture of JCVD's character in a newspaper that did an article about the Legion, he gets furious and sends two of his own men to join the Legion, go through the training, and find him so that thy can kill him.
So, there's that going on too, but mostly just a whole lot of dusty desert battles and lots of death.
This was a very enjoyable movie for me. Came out at the tail end of the 20th Century just as JCVD's theatrical career was coming to an end and he found his new niche in the home video action film market.
It has to be one of my favorite non-martial arts films he has done. Also, for a lower budgeted straight-to-video production, it was pretty Damme good!I'm going to give this one a 6 out of 10. I think JCVD fans will enjoy it. Give it a watch and let me know what you think.
I'll catch you on my next Damme review!
