Day 5: "The Last Mercenary" (2021)
30 Damme Movies in 30 Damme Days
The 5th Damme Day:
This was my first time to watch this JCVD movie. It is a Netflix exclusive.
"The Last Mercenary" is a French action comedy made for Netflix.
The first thing that I want to point out is that the dialogue in this movie is dubbed. I can't say if the acting was good or not because other people dubbed the voices in English, so the audio doesn't match up with the lips and it comes off looking like a cheesy Kung Fu action flick.
It was good to see JCVD in a new film. He looks great and still has some great moves. He even pulls off his trademark above ground split where each foot is on a different wall, and he does a split, suspending himself at the top of a room by the ceiling and then drops down on two unsuspecting kidnappers. In this movie, you get to see JCVD in some great fight scenes, action-packed car chases, he's even dances, and there's a scene where he's in drag.
The story is about a super spy (JCVD) known only as "The Mist" who hasn't been seen in 25 years. He is a legend among the international intelligence community. He has a son that is sort of in a "witness relocation" type program that has no idea who his father is.
The mom died when the son was a child, and he has been raised by an undercover agent. The boy has no idea that his caretaker is an agent and lives a normal life. Anyhoo... a lot of events unfold, and the boy's cover is blown and there are agents who are assigned to assassinate him. The Mist comes out of hiding to save his son.

The film is a spoof on spy films. I love that JCVD can make fun of himself and seems to enjoy doing it. He was the best part of the entire movie. As far as the comedy goes, I think that part was weak. It probably would have been much better as a serious action movie.
I'm glad I watched it once, but it's not one I'd want to see again. I rate it a 3 out of 10 as far as JCVD movies go.
I'll be back tomorrow for my next Damme movie review.
