The 7th Damme Day:
"Pound of Flesh" (2015)
For today's Damme viewing, I chose "Pound of Flesh". The film stars JCVD as Deacon Lyle, a man who after a one-night stand in a hotel in the Philippines, wakes up in a bathtub full of ice with a kidney missing. He was supposed to meet up with his estranged brother, played by John Ralston, the next day at a hospital to donate that kidney to save the life of his brother's young daughter who has a kidney disease and only has a few months to live without the transplant. Now the Lyle brothers with help from Deacon's friends in the criminal underworld of the Philippines, set out on a mission to retrieve the kidney at any cost.
Aki Aleong, who co-starred in JCVD's "The Quest" plays one of those underworld buddies who helps the brothers out. The movie also co-stars Charlotte Peters as a hooker who sets Deacon up for the kidney steal but then has a change of heart and helps him with his newfound mission.
The movie has a lot of gunplay and fight action, but with JCVD's age, the fights are scaled back. I would say that you probably get 25% of the flashy flying kicks you normally get in a JCVD movie. He makes up for the lack of that with a lot of gun action and you see a lot more of his acting chops in this one than his fist chops.
I liked the story and it's a very scary topic... to wake up with a kidney gone.
I enjoyed the movie, but not as much as some of his earlier films.
I rate it a 5 out of 10. I felt it was just a middle of the fence movie, not bad but not great.
Check it out and let me know what you think.
